Kick Off the Academic Year on a Positive Note!

by admin

For some of us, the school year might feel like it’s approaching too quickly. But when I get inspired, I just can’t help but share. Many of you might recall my top three back-to-school strategies. This year, I’m adding a few more to the mix.

  1. Pace Your Teaching of Procedures
Diving into my first year of teaching was nothing short of intense. Thinking back, I can only describe it as overwhelming. However, amid the fatigue, it was a year filled with new learnings and thrilling moments. Through this post, I aim to share my insights, hoping it could ease the journey for others. One piece of advice: introduce and reiterate your classroom procedures in the initial days. Trust me, it sets the tone for the entire year.

Here are some of the procedures I emphasize at the beginning:

  • Classroom entry routine.
  • Lining up techniques.
  • Hallway walking (I use the “check your feet” method for alignment. Just a word of caution: It can sometimes be misconstrued!).
  • Signals for restroom and water breaks.
  • Lunchroom protocols.
  • Pencil sharpening etiquette.
  • Gathering and returning classroom resources.
  • Classroom rules (The four golden ones: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Kind).
  • Behavior chart demonstrations.
  • End-of-day procedures.
  • Conflict resolution – I introduce “I messages” and role-play scenarios to handle accidents and missteps.
  1. The “Teach to…” Method
In my initial year, my mentor emphasized the “teach to” strategy. The idea is simple: lay out your expectations, model them, let students discuss what’s wrong and right, and then have them demonstrate. For instance, with lining up: you’ll model it, let the kids point out the dos and don’ts, and then let them show it. Repeating this process helps reinforce the behavior throughout the year.
  2. Kick Off with Positivity
Resist the urge to jump into the curriculum immediately. Starting with light, enjoyable activities helps students absorb the classroom procedures more effectively. Plus, I’ve compiled packs of activities tailored for the first week of every grade. And good news, I’ve bundled these with other necessary back-to-school resources. Don’t miss out on these discounted resources – get yours before school starts!
  3. Foster a Sense of Community
I can’t stress this enough: students need to feel cherished to give their best. From day one, let them know they’re valued. Celebrate good behavior and tactfully address the not-so-good ones. Most students, I’ve noticed, respond positively to subtle cues. Just being in their vicinity often does the trick.
  4. Prioritize Self-Care
If there’s one thing I learned the hard way, it’s this: teachers aren’t superheroes. Remember to look after yourself. Even superheroes need food! The journey is long, and rushing through won’t do any good. Instead, savor it. It’s alright if your classroom isn’t out of a magazine. Crafting it with your students gives it a personal touch and promotes ownership.

I appreciate you diving into these insights. Here’s to a successful school year ahead! #backtoschool #wegotthis
